Literature Text

So simple, yet so dangerous.

If uttered it will bring death and chaos, or so the legends say. Nobody even knows how this all started or why it continues, all that matters is that people still tell the story and warn each younger generation of what will happen.

Though, there is always a brave and foolish one in each group, isn't there?

The children like to gather at nights to play and comfort each other while the adults relax without worry over their children. This is where the  danger begins. The story has been recited by and older sibling, the children wide eyed and fearful; but there will always be one that wants to test the fates. They will walk into the darkroom that has no windows, proud and boastful to their young friends once older brother is gone; wanting to prove that nothing bad will happen. How could it? Legends are for babies and old people with no sense of adventure.

That child will recite the words three times into the mirror of glass, holding back the fear that is building up inside with each muttering of the cursed words. The child will think they have made a terrible mistake, but will refuse to back down now. The others wait outside, worried and equally as fearful.

The third time's a charm they always say.

As those lips part and start the final decree, a face will appear in the looking glass. So innocent she looks, so young and harmless. Why would anybody fear this spirit? The child will inch closer, fingers running over the glass where the mysterious being laid their hand on the other side. That once innocent face smirks and sharp teeth and bloody mouth are revealed.

Screaming is all anybody hears before an eerie silence covers. The other children are hiding as an elder runs down, hearing the noise in his slumber. He throws open the door to the dark room and sees nothing but a bloody scrap of child's clothing laying on the ground.

Eyes go hard as the man holds the fabric in his hand. He clenches it in his fist and sighs. He had warned the children not to do such dangerous things, that older brother was speaking the truth.

"Another victim to that cursed Bloody Mary."
